The proposed summer intern will report to the administrator of the Holmes Soil & Water Conservation District, 62. W. Clinton St., Millersburg, OH 44654. Candidates should be students who have graduated from High School (or equivalent GED) or are students completing a college program, including those who will have graduated in Spring 2025. This position will include up to 480 hours, at up to 40 hours per work week, with some required work hours outside of the normal 8-4:30pm. This position will be compensated at a rate of $15 per hour, and will be eligible for OPERS retirement accrual, holidays and sick time per District policies. This position is seasonal and as such is not eligible for health insurance benefits.

Job Summary

The Intern position is responsible for assisting with field and office technical duties in the Holmes Soil and Water Conservation District.  Work areas include GIS, conservation practice planning/engineering, wildlife, stormwater, MWCD cost-share, and education programs.  Additionally, in support of the Holmes County Water Quality Initiative, Intern(s) will share some portion of their time with the Holmes County Health Department, incorporating historical data and collecting field data related to treatment systems throughout Holmes County. All duties and actions taken by this position, while on official duty, will be performed in a safe and healthy manner and will be of a nature to reflect favorably on the Holmes Soil and Water Conservation District.

Examples of tasks related to the above work areas include:

  • GIS - mapping various current and historical projects and developing georeferenced materials.

  • Engineering – assist with inventory of current assets, survey, and design of projects.

  • Education - assist in promoting the education program, planning, and participating in events.

Essential Knowledge, Abilities and Skills, Education

  • High School education/diploma/GED.

  • Beginning (or completed within the last semester) an associate degree or higher in Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources, Chemistry, Engineering, Education, Computer Science, or Business Management.

  • Actual farm, forestry or wildlife experience, knowledge of agriculture, or a strong desire for good resource management.

  • Valid Ohio Driver’s License.

Essential Functions of the Position

  • Provides technical and engineering field assistance to landowners and units of government.

  • Provides technical information to land users.

  • Assists in document collection and verification for the H2Ohio and MWCD programs.

  • Assists in conducting educational events, county fair display, and other public relations related events.

  • Assist with file management, retention, and conversion to electronic format.

  • Assists with data entry and records information in geographic databases.

  • Assists partner agencies.

Job Location

Office will be located at the Holmes SWCD office in Millersburg with occasional travel.  Typical schedule will be Monday-Friday from 8:00am-4:30pm with 0.5 hour unpaid lunch. 

Equipment Used

Holmes SWCD provided vehicles, technology, GPS equipment, survey tools, and other various tools.

Physical Requirements 

  • Able to lift 50 pounds and walk over rough terrain.

  • May occasionally require more than an 8 hour work day.
